Every ship needs its Captain, and every family benefits from the right Matriach. Someone warm enough to love, comfort and soothe… someone with enough authority to calm, cajole or correct when needed … someone with enough wisdom to know when to do which, and how much.
That is our Amzhad. Kora was 2 years old when her mother came to live with us. Kora had always been over the moon every time they caught up… but was a little shocked when night fell and wait… mum’s STAYING??! Never mind the next day, and the next……!
But it was perfect timing for our Queen to have the Queen Mum move in, as Kora was getting a teeeeeeensy bit big for her pretty white boots, pushing her little bro Bash around and generally making all and sundry forcibly aware of her great beauty and limitless confidence. Hence, having her mother’s firm but gentle paw, sometimes literally on her shoulder, was just what she needed to check her ego. And Amzhad never overdoes it. A look, a subtle lift of the chin… she wields her power with great finesse.
Likewise, young Bash, tired of being ground under his sister’s stabby elbows, had become very stroppy about “sharing”… and thus arrived Amzhad, with no fuss, just quietly standing or sitting beside him whenever it suited her, and he knew he needed to pipe down and accept it.
And it’s not only Azawakh mental-health which Amzhad makes a priority. An old-fashioned mother, she is a firm believer in limiting screen-time of her charges. Thus, whenever Simon or I are deemed to be spending too much time on our respective phones, a firm nudge with a nose relocates said device whilst an elegant white paw brings our nearest arm to rub her cute pink tummy instead… a much more psychologically soothing activity, for all involved.
